Homemade Sunscreen for Natural Nourishment of the Skin

Sunscreen is one of the best options for maintaining healthy skin and prevent dark spots, sagging, and wrinkles that may be caused by sunburn. It can also help in maintaining a perfect skin tone. However, commercial sunscreens may contain chemicals or artificial ingredients that may further damage the skin. Here, homemade sunscreen can be much more beneficial. Because it contains no chemicals, and the natural ingredients used in it can help in enriching the overall skin condition.

DIY Homemade Sunscreen Ingredients and Recipes

Understanding the ingredients and the recipes they work helps us decide the sunscreen lotion that fits our skin condition. Below listed are some of the prominent ingredients and recipes for natural and homemade sunscreen.


1. Almond oil

Almond oil is used for ages to treat dry skin, acne, sun damage, and other skin disorders. The healthy and essential fatty acids in it dissolve excess oil, enhance cell turnover, and improve overall skin condition. It can also reduce puffiness and reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks on the skin(1).

2. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is one of the best-known sources for moisturizing the skin, treating acne, and promoting wound healing. It is also antimicrobial, meaning it can protect your skin from any harmful microbes that may be lingering on the surface.

3. Shea butter

Shea butter exhibits excellent anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and healing properties. It is also emollient, meaning it can soak into the skin and create a smooth and soft barrier that retains the moisture for a longer time.

4. Zinc oxide

Zinc oxide helps in protecting the skin from sun damage and sunburns. It can also treat acne, rashes, and promote healing. Besides, it also exhibits excellent anti-aging benefits.

5. Beeswax

Beeswax acts as a protective agent by creating a barrier between the skin and the pollutant or harmful environment without clogging the pores. It also helps in cell health and cell reconstruction.

6. Carrot seed oil

Carrot seed oil is known to contain anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties that can improve skin health. The oil may also help in slowing down the aging of the skin.

7. Red raspberry seed oil

8. Vitamin E oil

10. Aloe vera gel

Almond and coconut oil sunscreen


  • Almond oil – 1/2 cup
  • Coconut oil – 1/4 cup
  • Shea butter – 2 tbsp
  • Beeswax – 1/4 cup
  • Zinc oxide – 2 tbsp
  • Red raspberry seed oil – 1 tsp
  • Carrot seed oil – 1 tsp

How to make it?

  • Take a large glass jar.
  • Add the almond oil, coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax, and red raspberry seed oil to the jar.
  • Mix all the ingredients.
  • Take a medium saucepan and heat it with some water in it.
  • Take the jar with the ingredients and put it in the saucepan with water.
  • Stir the ingredients in the jar slowly as they melt and mix well together.
  • Once all the ingredients are properly mixed, pour zinc oxide into it and stir it.

Almond and coconut oil is now ready to use. Store it at room temperature; you can put it in the refrigerator to increase its shelf life.

Coconut Oil and Shea Butter Sunscreen Lotion


  • Coconut oil – 2 tbsp
  • Shea butter – 1 1/2 tbsp
  • Vitamin E oil – 1/ tsp
  • Jojoba oil – 1/2 tsp
  • Zinc oxide – 2 tbsp

How to make it?

  • Take a large saucepan, fill it with water up to few inches.
  • Now take another jar or smaller pan and add coconut oil, shea butter, and jojoba oil to it. (You can also use a double boiler).
  • Heat it until all the ingredients mix well and occasionally stir while it is on heat.
  • Once all the ingredients melt, remove it from the heat and put it aside to cool.
  • Now, add zinc oxide and vitamin E oil to pan or jar with all the ingredients and mix well.

Your coconut oil and shea butter sunscreen lotion is ready to use. Store it in a cold and dark place.

Coconut oil and aloe-vera gel sunscreen lotion


  • Coconut oil – 1/4 cup
  • Shea butter – 1 cup
  • Zinc oxide – 2 tbsp
  • Aloe vera gel – 1/4 cup
  • Walnut extract oil – 20 drops


  • Take a saucepan and add coconut oil, shea butter, aloe vera gel, and walnut extract oil to it.
  • Heat the saucepan on a low or medium flame until all the ingredients melt and mix well together.
  • Occasionally stir the saucepan with ingredients while it is on heat.
  • Once ingredients melt and are mixed properly, remove it from the heat and put it aside to cool down.
  • Now add zinc oxide and stir it until it is mixed properly with the other ingredients.
  • Your coconut oil and aloe-vera gel sunscreen lotion is now ready to use. Store it in a cold and dark place.

Note: Make sure to check if you are allergic to any of the ingredients before using it for making the sunscreen lotion. 


Our skin is the most commonly exposed body part and is also prone to more damage. The pollutants from the environment and sunburns can make it hard for the skin to survive with basic care. Hence, using sunscreen lotion is imperative.
