Gum disease, often known as Gingivitis, occurs when plaque build-up at the side and under the gum line. Plague is nothing but a type of gram-negative bacteria that grow in tooth and gum margins.

1. Oil Pulling

Unrefined coconut oil and sesame oil, in amalgamation, tend to promote the overall quality and hygiene of the oral cavity. It tends to work against bacteria and pathogens and thus eliminates the chain of events which leads to gingivitis and periodontitis. Additionally, they also whiten the teeth

  • Swish a mouthful of one of the two oils for 15 – 20 minutes
  • Spit and rinse your mouth with warm water
  • Repeat everyday

Alternatively,

  • Rub your teeth and gum with this paste for 5 minutes every day – a Pinch of salt + 1 tsp Mustard Oil
  • Rinse with warm water

2. Salt Water Gargle

Saltwater gargle is one of the oldest and effective remedies that are out there. Not only is it inexpensive and effective, but it also imparts several health benefits such as curing periodontitis, keeping bacteria(1) away, reduces swelling and much more. Using this remedy is also very easy.

How to use?

  • Swish your mouth with a combination of 2 tsp. salt and a glass of lukewarm water
  • Do this for 1 minute
  • Repeat 2 – 3 times a day

3. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen Peroxide is a household chemical that is a strong anti-bacterial agent, that does a wonderful job in treating oral diseases such as periodontitis and plaque. It also does a wonderful job in whitening your teeth.

How to use?

  • Rinse your mouth with equal parts of hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) and water for a minute
  • Alternatively, rub your gums and teeth with a paste of Hydrogen Peroxide and water
  • Continue until satisfying results
  • Do not use concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide and don’t use this treatment quite often

4. Turmeric

Turmeric has a great antibacterial and anti-inflammatory property, curcumin. Curcumin in turmeric fights bacteria and cures gum diseases to a great extent.

  • Brush your teeth twice daily with Turmeric powder using a soft bristles
  • Prepare a paste with vitamin E oil and turmeric powder. Apply the paste on your gums before going to bed. Rinse with warm water the next morning
  • Repeat once every day

5. Basil

Holy Basil can stop your gums from bleeding, one of the primary and common symptoms of Periodontitis. It also proves to be an effective treatment for pus, toothache and painful gums.

  • Make a paste of dried holy basil and mustard oil
  • Rub the paste on your gums and brush your teeth with soft bristles 2 times a day as long as symptoms persist

6. Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree oil again is a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent that has been several times used in Ayurveda. It also reduces bleeding and is used in the treatment of Oral Thrush and Herpes.

  • Brush your teeth and gums with Tea Tree Oil gel twice daily
  • You can also mix a few drops of the oil in your toothpaste and brush every day

7. Black Tea

Black tea, as well as green tea,  has greater percentages of antioxidants that fight infections. They also contain tannic acid, which helps reduce pain and inflammation(2).

  • Soak a tea bag in hot water for 10 minutes.
  • Cool it down. Place the bag on the affected area for 5 minutes
  • Repeat several times until symptoms vanish

8. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has antimicrobial and healing properties that deal with bacteria that cause periodontitis, fight bad breath and heal mouth ulcers.

  • Swish your mouth with Aloe Vera Juice twice every day
  • Massage your gums and teeth with fresh Aloe Vera gel and leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes. Rinse it with water
  • Repeat several times a day

9. Coconut Oil

Like we had said before coconut oil has several health benefits and one of them is oral health. It could be one of the best home remedies for periodontitis.

  • Combining baking soda and coconut oil will balance the acids present in your mouth
  • Make a paste of coconut oil and baking soda
  • Use this paste instead of your toothpaste and brush twice a week to relieve signs of periodontitis.

10. Black Pepper

Black pepper is an age-old Ayurveda medicine for treating periodontitis. It strengthens gums, fights tarter and plagues from accumulating and reduces bacterial infection.

  • Finely powder black pepper. Take equal amount of salt and black pepper powder and gently massage on your gums for 2 – 3 minutes
  • Rinse with warm water
  • Repeat 2 – 3 times a day
