How to Cure Drool Rash and Pacifier Rash in Babies

Teething is a great time of ordeal for a baby and if that is coupled up with rashes around the mouth and the chin that gets dry and flaky, it could feel much worse for your baby.

But these rashes that are mostly caused due to the use of pacifiers are a common occurrence. During teething, one thing that keeps most babies calm is the use of pacifiers(1). They come in various shapes and sizes and there are some orthodontic pacifiers that are designed in such a way that help the development of your baby’s palate and jaw.

It has been often found that pacifiers that do not have a vented shield in them, cannot help prevent the saliva(1) from constantly collecting on your baby’s delicate skin which over results in irritation which in turn results in rashes around the mouth, which are generally known as pacifier rash.

Pacifier rashes appear as flat patches of skin with tiny red bumps that are scattered around the mouth, chin and often remain for weeks which can be really scary for any mother.

They are a few ways in which you can help to treat Pacifier Rash

1. Soap

Do not use any kind of soap on your baby’s face as this might aggravate the rashes and make it spread. Instead, you can use hypoallergenic organic wash which will not irritate the delicate and sensitive skin of your child.

2. Balms

Small amounts of hypoallergenic balms can be used to ease the skin irritation and rash on your baby’s chin and around the mouth.

You can also use hydrocortisone cream which helps in ensuring to treat the rashes if they are turning allergic.

3. Keep it Dry

It is highly crucial that you ensure that the affected area stays dry at all times. Teething will make your child drool a lot which is why you need to be conscious about keeping the area dry since the dampness will cause more irritation as well as make the rash spread and grow.

4. Keep It Moisturized

Keep the affected area clean and moisturized(2) at all times. Apply Vaseline on the rash to create a barrier between the skin and the drool so as to prevent the saliva from dampening the area thereby irritating the rashes more.

Make sure to reapply the Vaseline after you have given your baby a bath before you lay him down to sleep.

5. Limit the Pacifier Time

If you are sure that the rashes are being caused by the pacifier, take the next step of limiting the pacifier time since that will ensure that the drool does not collect on your baby’s mouth and cause irritation to spread or grow worse.

6. Diet

Sometimes, babies might be allergic to certain kinds of food that might also result in such rashes.

Drool Rash: All You need to know!

Drolling is a side effect of teething(2) seen in young infants. However, several babies drool even when they aren’t getting teeth.

Drool rashes are caused due to the constant presence of saliva on your baby’s chin, neck and even sometimes on the chest. They present themselves as small red bumps or slightly inflamed patches of skin.

There are a few easy ways you could tackle drool rashes. Wash the afflicted areas with warm water and just make to pat it dry as the skin is very sensitive. Also, make sure to keep the skin completely dry and do this twice daily.

It is also good to use petroleum jelly on the skin or sites of drolling, as it acts as a barrier between the saliva and the skin. However, make sure that you apply only a thin layer over the site.

Additionally, you could make sure to use a mild, unscented baby wash whilst bathing them. This would keep the skin moist and healthy and stop the development of the rashes.

Make sure to keep an eye for which foods might be the cause and stop it with immediate effect. Even formula sometimes can be a cause of an allergic reaction which is why you need to be highly conscious of this diet.
