Whereas one may hear regular complains about receding hairlines for people around them, there is hardly anyone who might have complained about or heard complains about receding gums. But that does not go to say that it is an uncommon problem since most people with dental issues have the problem of the receding gums to some extent even though the extent might be quite little at first.

Receding gums are caused mainly when one has the habit of brushing their teeth rather aggressively and/or in the wrong manner. It is also caused when hormonal fluctuations are seen in women, mainly during puberty, pregnancy or menopause. Receding gums can also be cause by the excessive grinding and clenching of the teeth thereby loosening the gum or injuring them to quite an extent.

Even crooked teeth or a misaligned bite have been reported to be the reasons for receding gums. Even though quite rare, hereditary issues, have also been known to cause the receding gum problem.  Body piercing and tongue piercing also cause gums to receded because of the constant friction with pieces of jewellery. And of course, smoking or consuming in tobacco in any form has been warned as one of the causes of receding gum.

The end result of receding gums is that your dental health is severely compromised and as a result you might have to lose a few teeth as well. But with timely intervention you might actually help improve the condition of your gum.

Prevention is ofcourse said to be the best cure but there are times when the moment for prevention passes unnoticed and all you are left to do is work out some way to contain the damage. Using home remedies is the best way that you can take care of your dental health and the problem of your receding gums since they give you the liberty to pick and choose what you feel will best suit you.

Some of the home remedies that you can try are:

Green Tea

Green tea has been known to be rich in antioxidants which help in keeping a lot of diseases at bay. Which is why, sipping onto some green tea will make sure to help with the problem of the receding gums.

Clove

Cloves have been found to be a miracle cure when it comes to any kind of dental problems as is clove oil. Its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties work towards the repair of any damage that the teeth might have incurred.

Massaging a drop or two of clove oil on the gums will help fight the bacteria and help with preventing further damage to them.

Rose Vinegar

Most people do not know this, but rose vinegar has been found to be helpful in strengthening the gums as such using it as a rinse for the mouth will work wonders for your dental health as well.

To make rose vinegar soak 3 ounces of rose petals in some half a bottle of red wine vinegar and let it steep for atleast 7 days and then strain and bottle it. Add a tablespoon of it in a cup of luke warm water and use as a rinse everyday and see the difference for yourself.

Aloe Vera

The anti-inflammatory and anti bacterial properties in Aloe Vera helps protect the teeth and the gums from infection as such massaging the fresh gel taken directly from the plant will help with the problem of the receding gums.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is known for its antifungal and antimicrobial properties and as such you can consider using it as well. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to a cup of luke warm water and use it as a mouthwash every day. It will help in protecting the gums as well as prevent anymore receding. It also works in combating plaque build-up which is one of the main reasons for gums receding.

Sesame Oil

Sesame oil helps in removing toxic substances as well as any plaque build-up that might be present. As such, using a quarter cup of sesame oil that has been warmed up a bit, as a rinse or a mouthwash every day will help with the problem of the receding gums to a great extent.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is known to have certain antibacterial properties that helps combat infections and prevents the onset of any dental diseases. Which is why, you can always use some virgin coconut oil and massage your gums with it after brushing the teeth. This will give them a protective cover and reduce the build-up of any plaque that might work towards the problem of the receding gums. Coconut oil has also been known to work towards protecting tooth decay as a result of the receding gums as well.

Lemon Oil

The mild antiseptic qualities of lemon oil helps in stimulating tissue formation when it is used on the gums on a daily basis. Do not use lemon directly on the teeth as that might corrode the teeth because of the presence of high concentration of acid in it. Lemon oil, when used every morning as a mouthwash after brushing your teeth will not just keep your mouth fresh but also work as an antibacterial agent for your dental issues.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil helps kills the germs in your mouth thereby preventing plaque build-up and infection. It is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties which help in reducing any swelling that your gums might have. Using Eucalyptus oil diluted in water as a mouthwash or even massaging this solution onto the gums will help prevent tooth decay and other gum problems. It is also known to stimulate tissue growth thereby preventing the recession of the gums.

Myrrh

Myrrh is a resinous substance that when used as tooth powder or as a paste will help in strengthening the gums and help with the prevention of the recession of the gums. It also helps in preventing root exposure and combating any damage done on the teeth because of this.

Maintaining A Diet

If you are suffering from gum recession, it is best that you avoid any kind of sugary food products since they only worsen the condition. Also, keep away from soda-infused drinks as they are known to damage the teeth, just as foods that are acidic in nature do.

Instead, you should opt to snack on fruits and vegetables in the raw from since that will not just exercise the gums and the teeth but will also not harm them in any way. Fruits like cranberries are known for their anti adhesive properties and as such snaking on these will keep both you and your teeth healthy. Even cashew nuts and green tea are excellent as snack food when you are suffering from receding gums.

Any vegetable that is enriched with Vitamin C such as cantaloupe, kiwi, broccoli as well as green leafy vegetables will act towards reversing the recession of the gums and since these also contain bioflavonoid, they will help heal roots exposure as well.
