Conjunctivitis commonly known as pink eye is an inflammation of your conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is a thin clear tissue that lies over the white part of your eyes. This layer lines the inside of your eyelid. Pink eye is caused due to a number of causes such as bacterial and viral infection.

Irritants such as shampoos, dirt and smoke can also lead to conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis can affect both men and women of all age groups. The common symptoms associated with conjunctivitis include itchiness, redness and swelling in the eyes.

Natural Cures for Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis can be cured with natural home remedies like:

  1. Honey

Honey is considered as a common natural cure for conjunctivitis. To use honey as a cure for conjunctivitis, mix three tablespoon of honey in two cups of boiling water. Let this mixture cool for few minutes and pour a few drops of this solution in your eye to get relief from conjunctivitis.

You can also soak a cotton pad or a clean cloth in this solution and put it in your eyes. Honey is known for its excellent anti-bacterial properties thus, it helps in curing the infection quickly.

  1. Potato

Potato usually works as a natural astringent and thus an excellent remedy to cure conjunctivitis or pink eye at home. Take a potato and cut it in slices and place it on your infected eye for 15-20 minutes. Repeat this process for 2-3 days to naturally cure conjunctivitis.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric is an effective cure for conjunctivitis. Take 2 tablespoon of turmeric powder and mix it in a cup of boiled water and apply it as a compress on your infected eye. Turmeric is generally considered as a good antibiotic thus, it reduces the symptoms associated with conjunctivitis or pink eye.

  1. Fennel seeds

Fennel seeds are used to cure a variety of diseases including conjunctivitis. Take some fennel seeds and boil it in a cup of water and use this solution as an eyewash as a natural cure for conjunctivitis.

  1. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a common home cure used to cure conjunctivitis. Take a clean cloth and soak it in fresh aloe vera gel and place it on your infected eye. Aloe vera is one of the best remedies used to cure conjunctivitis due to its medicinal properties.

  1. Warm or cold compress

While suffering with bacterial conjunctivitis, apply a warm compress to your eyes. Take a clean cloth and soak it in lukewarm water and gently press it over your infected eye. Warm compress mainly helps in reducing swelling caused due to conjunctivitis.

Warm compress can also spread infections thus, it is recommended to use a separate cloth for both eyes to avoid the risk of spreading the infection from one eye to the other. A cold compress can also be used to cure conjunctivitis naturally. A cold compress is generally used to cure an infection caused due to an allergic reaction.

  1. Marigold

Marigold can also be used as a compress to reduce the inflammation caused due to conjunctivitis. Marigold is considered as one of the essential natural cures for conjunctivitis.

  1. Chamomile

Chamomile is an ancient home remedy to cure conjunctivitis or pink eye. Take one teaspoon of dried chamomile flower and boil it in a cup of water. Let it cool down for some time and use this remedy as eyewash after straining the liquid to cure conjunctivitis naturally. This remedy is known to provide quick relief from conjunctivitis.

  1. Barberry

Barberry is considered as a good anti-bacterial agent to cure conjunctivitis. To prepare the eyewash solution, take some powdered barberry and boil it in a cup of water. Let this solution cool for some time and use this solution as eyewash to cure conjunctivitis.

  1. Elderberry blossom tea

This tea is usually considered as a herbal tea that is used in curing conjunctivitis. It also helps in reducing the infection and provides quick relief from conjunctivitis.

  1. Yoghurt

Yoghurt is an effectual remedy to cure conjunctivitis or pinkeye. Take liver cultured yoghurt and apply it on your infected eye as a poultice to eliminate the inflammation and redness caused due to conjunctivitis.

  1. Baking soda

Baking soda is considered as a natural cure for conjunctivitis or pink eye. To prepare eyewash, Mix one tablespoon of baking soda in a cup of water and use it as eyewash. It is one of the best home cures for conjunctivitis. Eyewash prepared with baking soda generally gives a soothing effect to your eyes.

  1. Boric Acid

Boric acid generally works well for pink eye or conjunctivitis cure. Take one tablespoon of boric acid in 1/4th cup of boiling water and use this solution as eyewash to treat the inflammation caused due to conjunctivitis. You can also use this solution as a compress over your infected eyes. You can use this home remedy to cure conjunctivitis thrice a week for better results.

  1. Castor Oil

Castor oil is generally used to cure different infections like conjunctivitis or pink eye. Put a drop of castor oil in your affected eye thrice a day to cure conjunctivitis.

  1. Breast milk

Breast milk is an effectual cure for many diseases and protects the baby from infections. You can use 2-3 drops of breast milk in your infected eye to provide relief from pink eye infection.

  1. Cold Bread

Placing cold bread over the infected eye can provide relief from itchiness and inflammation caused due to pink eye or conjunctivitis.

  1. Charcoal dust

One of the best cures for conjunctivitis is charcoal dust. Take one teaspoon of charcoal dust and mix it with ¼ teaspoon of sea salt and mix it in a cup of water. Boil this solution and strain it after cooling it for few minutes. Pour around 4-5 drops of this solution into the infected eye as a cure for conjunctivitis.

  1. Coriander

Take some dried coriander leaves and boil it in water and cool it down for few minutes. Cool it down after straining it and use this solution as an eyewash. You can also use this as a compress to provide relief from itching or inflammation. Coriander generally helps minimizing the swelling and pain caused due to pink eye.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Take one cup of water add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to it. Take a cotton ball and soak in it and apply on your infected eye.

  1. Calendula

It is an ancient home remedy used to cure conjunctivitis. Take two tablespoons of calendula flower and mix it in a cup of water and boil this solution. Use this solution either as a warm compress or as eyewash to clean your eyes.

  1. Indian Gooseberry or Amla

Amla is an essential home cure for conjunctivitis. Indian Gooseberry or amla juice can be mixed with honey and drink this juice twice a day for better results.

  1. Lemon Juice

Take lemon juice and mix it with water. Use a clean cotton swab to apply this lemon juice on the eyelid of the infected eye.  Apply this lemon juice will help in fighting with infection caused due to conjunctivitis.

  1. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is an ancient and effective remedy used to cure itchiness while suffering with pink eye or conjunctivitis. Take a cotton ball and soak it in coconut oil and apply on the eyelid of your infected eye for quick relief from conjunctivitis.

  1. Salt water

Salt water plays an important role in clearing the infection caused due to conjunctivitis. You can prepare a nature eye drops by mixing one teaspoon of salt in a cup of water. Pour 2-3 drops of salt water in your eyes to cure conjunctivitis.

  1. Garlic

Take a garlic clove and peel and cut in order to get the juice come out. Rub your upper eyelid with the juice as a natural cure for conjunctivitis. While apply garlic juice you may experience a stinging sensation. Garlic is also considered as an excellent antibiotic that works well for infections caused due to conjunctivitis.

  1. Vegetable juice

Drinking vegetable juice like spinach and carrot juice can provide quick relief from conjunctivitis. Take 200ml of spinach juice and 300ml of carrot juice and mix it well and drink this solution to heal the infection caused due to conjunctivitis.

  1. Baby shampoo

Baby shampoo can also be used as a cure for conjunctivitis. Wash your hands with water and rub the shampoo between your hands to make suds. Take these suds and apply on to your eyes and leave it for few seconds. Wash you face with water and repeat this remedy to cure conjunctivitis naturally.

  1. Tea Bag

You can cure conjunctivitis or pinkeye by using tea bags. Prepare a cup of black tea and let it steep and cool it down with the teabag in the cup. Keep the tea bag lightly compressed on your infected eye for 15-20 minutes. You can also flush your eyes with cooled tea. Repeat this procedure repeatedly to cure conjunctivitis.

  1. Ice

You can use cubes and wrap it in tissue or soft cloth and apply on your eye to get quick relief from conjunctivitis.

  1. Soft contact lens cleaner

Soft contact lens cleaner can also be used as a natural remedy to cure conjunctivitis infection.
